DarbyTech’s Demonstrators
DarbyTech’s demonstrator units are smaller and less complex than the full process control trainer options offered. Their demonstrators are fully functional process units that use manually operated controls to demonstrate key concepts (individually) in both process operations and control. These demonstrator units provide students with hands-on experience in process control while demonstrating key process concepts.
Their range of Demonstrators includes:
- Carbon Capture Demonstrator
- Solar-Generated Hydrogen Workstation Demonstrator
- Domestic Boiler Burner Demonstrator (Cutaway)
- Gas Contactor Distillation Column Demonstrator
- Heat Exchanger Demonstrator
- Horizontal & Vertical Separator Demonstrator
- Hose Safety Demonstrator
- Pipeline Pigging Demonstrator
- Pump Demonstrator
- Sampling Station Demonstrator
- Two-Phase Flow Demonstrator
- Valve and Gasket Demonstrator
- Wellbore Hydraulic Demonstrator
- Simulated Hydrogen PEM Electrolyser Demonstrator
- Climbing Ladder Demonstrator

Horizontal Separation Demonstrator (010:HVSD)
The three-phase Separator demonstration apparatus is a small-scale vessel that performs continuous separation of a mixture of oil, air and water. It is available in horizontal and vertical orientations. The primary separation operation for crude oil occurs when the crude stream flows through a vessel of sufficient capacity to allow gravity separation of the gas, liquid hydrocarbon, and water phases. The trainer includes a clear horizontal primary separator vessel. The process has manual control valves with rotameters and is intended to demonstrate oilfield separation principles with basic visual/manual operation.
“Students gain a practical understanding of the principles of gravity separation – an important process within the Oil & Gas Industry!”
Equipment Specification & Process Highlights:
- Complete unit mounted on a utility size cart for ease of movement and storage
- Duplex weir configuration
- Clear PVC horizontal vessel and process piping
- 300 x 600mm (12″ dia x 24″) separator
- Two centrifugal pumps for water and oil
- Regenerative air blower
- Oil and water storage tanks
- Available in all world voltages/frequencies
Heat Exchanger Demonstrator (030:HED)
The DarbyTech Heat Exchanger Demonstrator consists of two heat exchangers with associated temperature indicators, flow indicators, and a temperature indicating controller. A valve is provided to reverse the tubeside flow direction. The two exchangers are of similar surface area but with unique design features.
Equipment Specification and Process Highlights:
- Process water flow rate is controlled with a flow meter and a manual control valve
- Cooling water flow is controlled with a PID controller and control valve based on the process outlet temperature
- Inlet and outlet water temperatures measurement
- Reverse flow valve to change tube-side flow direction.
- Complete unit mounted on a utility size carts fior each of movement and storage
- Available in all world voltages/frequencies (customer to specify electrical power available on-site)
Two-Phase Flow Demonstrator (060:2PFD)
The Two-Phase Flow demonstrator has a longer flow loop that shows the two-phase flow phenomena in pipes at a variety of liquid and gas flow rates. The flow profile and geometry in this instance vary widely as a function of the liquid and gas material properties as well as the flow rates through the pipeline.
Process Highlights:
- Working fluids: air and water
- Low-pressure, ambient temperature operation
- Continuously variable air and water flow rates (hand-operated valves)
- Process fluid flow rate indication
- Rotameter for the liquid system
- Averaging Pitot with a differential pressure gauge (dynamic pressure measurement) for the air stream
Students will gain hands-on experience with the behaviour of flow under different conditions through practical exercises involving pipe type, mass flow rate, and volumetric flow rate.
